I’ve lived in Miami for more than 40 years, written about the Freedom Tower, photographed it and driven past it countless times. Somehow, I had never been inside.

So today, the architect in me was excited to finally experience it.

Built in 1925 as the headquarters of a printing facility, the Mediterranean Revival tower was the tallest building in downtown Miami when it was completed. Decades later, it would become something much more significant.

From 1962 to 1974, it served as a processing and assistance center for Cuban refugees and became known as “El Refugio”, forever connecting the building to Miami’s Cuban exile story.

The museum is beautifully curated around that history, including Operation Pedro Pan, told through personal objects, photographs, oral histories, digital exhibits and memories. It also opens the conversation to other cultures and their own fights for freedom.

It was emotional to walk through.

I went wanting to see the restoration and architectural details of a building I’ve known from the outside for years. I left understanding it in a completely different way.

Miami beauty isn’t always found in the obvious views. Sometimes it’s the contrast between an extraordinary sky and the ordinary urban fabric beneath it.

Red skies over Wynwood, framed by concrete, glass, rooftops and power lines. A completely different composition from the Miami postcard, but the energy is unmistakably ours.

Dinner by boat the other night, and somewhere along the way I started photographing the things we barely think twice about.

The sound of the water against the boat. Waiting for a bridge to rise. Passing under the Metromover. The glow of the city reflected on the river. Warm air, loud colors, and a sky that decided to participate.

For us, it’s just another night in Miami.

And then you realize how completely unreal that sounds.
